ROYAL GAME OF UR
Ancient Games II
Origin : Sumer, circa 2600 B.C.
Type of game : Race game. The goal is to bring the pawns from start to finish before the other player can do the same.
History : The game was rediscovered by Sir Woolley when he excavated the royal cemetery of the city of Ur in the 1920's. Other boards have been found in Mesopotamia, Egypt and India. Like Senet, it was very popular and it was played on a variety of boards depending of the status of the player. It later evolved in a more complicated version that could be used to predict the future of the player.
